TECHNICAL SECRETARY FOOTBALL CLUB BARCELONA

After his stint at Barça as a player, in July 2018 Eric Abidal returned to the club as the new technical secretary of Fútbol Club Barcelona.

2014

The team finishes second in Ligue 1 and this result allows the AS Monaco FC to play in the Champions League next season.

He signed for one season as a new player for Olympiacos F.C. where he will also play the Champions League. In December 2014 he decided to end his professional career at the greek club.

2013

THE COMING BACK YEAR, MONACO

After a long recovery, Eric Abidal returns to play with F.C. Barcelona until the end of the season.

In July, he starts a new season in his first club, AS Monaco F.C., joined as captain.

On the 7th of April 2013, after 402 days of inactivity, Eric Abidal returns to walk on the field of Camp Nou, it was the match between FC Barcelona and RCD Mallorca.

Minute 68; Eric Abidal finally saw his dream of playing again coming true.

Eric announces that he leaves FC Barcelona in a press conference attended by all his first-team teammates and the board directors.

On the 1st of June 2013 he plays his last match at the Camp Nou. At the end, his teammates and all the supporters pay homage to him.

On the 8th of July 2013 Eric played again in the French League, signing for AS Monaco FC, where he was the team captain until the end of the season.

2012

A CHANGING AND EMOTIONAL YEAR

On the 15th of March 2012, Barcelona announces that Abidal would have to undergo a liver transplant due to some problems that were unresolved with the previous operation. His cousin Gérard was the donor.

The show of affection and support are immediate. Social networks are flooded with messages of support with the hashtag #AnimsAbidal

After discharge, he starts a training plan that includes a stage at the Vall d’Aran (Catalonia)  with the FC Barcelona physiotherapist, ​​Emili Ricart.

The public of the Parc des Princes in Paris payed tribute to Abidal letting him do the opening kickoff before the friendly match between Paris Saint-Germain and FC Barcelona.

2011

THE 28TH OF MAY, WEMBLEY, A DAY TO REMEMBER

Eric Abidal has been diagnosed with a liver tumor. The club announces the news in a crowded press conference.

On the 17th of March Abidal is operated for the first time at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona.

On the 19th of March, before the match between FC Barcelona and Getafe FC, Camp Nou is full of encouragement banners to Eric Abidal and this video is projected on the scoreboards. #AnimsAbi

Fifteen days after the surgery, Eric Abidal visited his teammates during the training session at the Camp Nou.

On the 2nd of May 2011 he returns to train with the rest of his teammates on the command of Pep Guardiola

On the 28th of May 2011 he lifts up the UEFA Champions League trophy at Wembley after beating Manchester United 3-1. Carles Puyol, FC Barcelona captain, had a great gesture by handing over the armband to Abidal on the final whistle and allowing him the honour of lifting the trophy.

On the 26th of August he won again the UEFA Super Cup against FC Porto with a 2-0 result.

2009

THE YEAR OF THE TITLES

In the 2008/2009 season, with Pep Guardiola as a manager, Abidal wins all the titles that FC Barcelona plays, both national and international.

La Liga

On the 16th of May FC Barcelona is proclaimed champion of La Liga 2008/2009.

Copa del rey

He wins the Copa del Rey against Athletic Club Bilbao at the Estadio Mestalla (Valencia). This time the final result was 1-4 in favor of FC Barcelona.

UEFA Champions League.

On the 27th of May 2009 in Rome, he won the 3rd UEFA Champions League against Manchester United, the final score was 2-0.

Spanish SuperCup

With FC Barcelona, he won also the Spain Supercup in which FC Barcelona faced the Athletic Club Bilbao to a double match, the overall result of the final was 1-5.

UEFA Super Cup

On the 28th of August he won the UEFA Super Cup against Shakhtar Donetsk, the score was 1-0. The match was played at the Stade Louis II in Monaco.

FIFA Club World Cup

The last title of the year was the FIFA Club World Cup, which was held in Abu Dhabi on Sheikh Zayed Stadium, against Estudiantes de la Plata (Argentina). The result was 1-2.

2007

OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS AND F.C. BARCELONA SIGNING

It is his last season in the French league and the year of his transfer to the Spanish League with FC Barcelona. He started a new stage in his career and his life.

On the 17th of January 2007  he scored the first goal for Lyon against FC Le Mans in the semifinals of the French League Cup where Lyon won 1-0. This goal was important because it gave the victory to his team and they were qualified for the final.

On the 28th of June 2007 Abidal signed for FC Barcelona with the number 22. Frank Rijkaard was the team manager.

That same year he was named as the best-left defender in Europe according to FIFA.

2006

2006 FIFA WORLD CUP FINAL

In 2006 he plays with the French National team the FIFA World Cup final against Italy held in Germany (Berlin). The match ended in a tie (1-1). Italy finally won the trophy on penalties.

2004

LEFT LILLE TO JOIN OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS

2004-2007 He left Lille to join Olympique Lyonnais where his coaches were Paul le Guen and Gerard Houllier.

In 2004 he made his debut with the French national team, from which he retired in June 2014.

2002

The transfer to Lille OSC

2002-2004 Eric Abidal joined Lille, made 62 French league appearances (Ligue 1) and met again Claude Puel as coach.
